A former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, has issued a stern warning about the potential repercussions if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) mismanages the Edo State gubernatorial election.

Note that the people of Edo State, South South, Nigeria, are currently at different polling units across the state making efforts to elect a new governor as Godwin Obaseki’s two term in office ends in November.

In a statement posted on his social media account, Odinkalu emphasized the significance of Edo State as a pivotal transit point in Nigeria, emphasizing that any mishandling of the election could have widespread implications for the entire nation.

Furthermore, Odinkalu specifically called out the chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu and the entire electoral body, expressing concern about potential deliberate interference in the Edo governorship election. He cautioned that such actions could negatively impact the country as a whole.

“If Mahmood Yakubu & @inecnigeria mess with #EdoDecides2024 like they habitually do deliberately, all of #Nigeria will suffer it: there is hardly anywhere u can go to in Nigeria without passing through Edo…. Not that the electoral bandit in charge of #INEC much cares”, Odinkalu shared on X.
